Well, the trip home was frightening on several counts. Although the chair didn’t come through with any additional damage, I did. Though nothing serious. I have to use an aisle chair to get on an off the plane.
An aisle chair is a special torture device used to move people who can’t walk onto and off [...]

Everyone who travels with a wheelchair has a story — perhaps many stories — about how it got smashed, lost, or disassembled by the airlines.
Tuesday it was my turn. My scooter arrived with its adjustable handle detached, and the separate parts (at least most of them) piled neatly on the seat. The baggage supervisor arrived and [...]

Been away from the office for a few days, and not connected to the Internet. Didn’t even get very twitchy.
I am glad that I have no broken wheelchair stories to report, and that I now know how to negotiate the DC Metro when the station elevator is broken.
Much happening and much to think about… hope [...]

and that may make my an anachronism. Or not.
It’s Wednesday, so that means an email from ALA Online with lots of fun (yet conceivably work-related) links, like this one from Web Worker Daily on “Six More Reasons to Use a Paper To-Do List.”
While I realize that pencil and paper have real limitations, and are not [...]

“Please excuse [TVS] for being absent from school; she was picketing the Federal Building.”
As it turned out, Mom didn’t get to write that note for me, although we were both looking forward to it. For some reason, school was out that day? It must be a trick of memory, because I would have sworn the [...]

We’re out of plastic bags (imprinted with our name and hours– promotion meets protection). So… it’s raining hard for the first time in days and days. How much would you like to bet that by the time the new bag order shows up we’ll be in clear skies?
The first bus I tried to catch this [...]

When I was a little girl, about six or seven, I knew something that turned out not to be true. I thought that when I grew up, I’d be able to walk and use my hands easily and speak clearly, just like “regular” kids. You see, I had read Heidi, and at the end of [...]

After a mere 10 months of pleading, pushing, entangling red tape, and enlisting the help of a nurse caseworker — I have a new manual chair.
My old chair was 10 years old, literally falling to bits. This chair is lovely. It feels a little odd; I’ve never had a low-back before. And the custom cushion [...]

UPDATE: [BLUSH] Well, it looks like a little wallow in self-pity and begging compliments still works. Thanks gentlemen, I’m abashed but pleased.
Uh Oh.
Just in time for a Lenten humility smackdown, our blog host has started dividing the active (which just barely includes me) and the inactive blogs, and adding little tags to the active blogs, [...]

Lent is the time for self-examination, and Sr. Edith’s post “Privilege and Inclusion” has given me much to think about.
Throughout my life I have dealt with discrimination and stupidity, and I have come to realize that my first recourse is to flash my credentials and competencies. I make sure my doctors and other health care [...]
